One of the only large things in our New York apartment is the 14-foot-long wall we have running uninterrupted through 2/3 of our apartment. This wall is painted a buttery yellow and has become the absolute bain of my existence over these past 10 months. It’s so big, so bare and so…. so long. It just doesn’t play nicely with anything else in the whole place. It’s sheer span mocks everything else in the worst way.
I don’t think the wall bothers Brad in the same way that it irks me. Probably because I spend twice the amount of time as he does in our compact dwelling- and what time he does spend there, most of it is sleeping.
One day, I got a brilliant idea: I am going to commission a work of art to fill the gigantic space! I called on our dear friend, and talented artist: Tobias Hathorn to take the job. He is the other half of T & T- our friends in Boston with whom we spent Thanksgiving. We negotiated a price and established a color palette and off he went into the creative ether. He created a tryptic, series of three works, based on our homeland by abstracting aerial photographs of Kansas farmland. Brad and I couldn’t be happier with the final product. Although, our first attempt at hanging them resulted in the squares snugly touching- bad math. We’ll modify the two on the edge to have some space between them, but you get the idea.
what a great idea!
Do you need an engineer to help you with the math?
What a totally cool idea – to commission a piece of art!
The Kingsley’s own great wall. Unique and creative.
I recognize the field.. On K96 near Hutchinson!
